Titanic Sub Tragedy Resurfaces an Age-Old Medtech Debate

Nestled in the French Quarter, on the corner of Iberville and Royal, is the Hotel Monteleone. The exterior of the property is stunning, but the real jaw-dropper is located indoors. Installed in 1949, the hotel boasts the Carousel Bar, a spinning bar created in the likeness of a carousel.

The Carousel Bar was once the favorite of famous 19th century authors like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, Anne Rice, Truman Capote, and even Eudora Welty. These authors’ love for the venue can also be seen in their writing, where the bar makes many an appearance.

The Vieux Carre (pronounced “voh-care-eh” by locals) was invented at the Carousel Bar in the late 1930s by the head bartender, Walter Bergeron. The recipe is said to have been first published in 1937 in “Famous New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ‘Em”, but other sources claim the drink wasn’t invented until the end of 1938. Regardless, the Vieux Carre stands as the Carousel Bar’s signature cocktail and one of its most frequently ordered drinks.
