Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar has a storied, colorful past that dates back to the early 1700s. Lafitte’s is the oldest building being used as a bar in the United States, and you can visit the historical landmark at 941 Bourbon Street.

Jean Lafitte is an infamous figure in New Orleans history, regarded as an entrepreneur, pirate, gentleman, derelict, and hero - all depending on who you ask. The blacksmith shop is believed to have been used by the Lafitte brothers as a front for their smuggling operation in the late 1700s. Lafitte and his pirate brigand later became the impetus for victory in the Battle of New Orleans.

It is said that Lafitte’s ghost still meanders about the blacksmith shop, often appearing in full-body sailor’s gear, casually standing in dimly lit corners staring at patrons until he is noticed - Once noticed, he disappears back into the shadows. These sightings are said to be frequent; thus, if you’re a late-night guest, there’s a good chance you’ll meet the renowned Mr. Lafitte.

The bar supposedly houses another otherworldly guest on the second floor. Not much is known about her, besides the fact that she is a somewhat talkative woman. She is said to be shyer than Lafitte, only showing herself to patrons on a handful of occasions. However, the reported encounters with her are chilling. Apparently, she seeks out patrons who make their way to the second story alone and whispers their own name into their ear. It’s theorized that she does this just to let you know that she is there and that she knows who you are.

Another paranormal phenomenon that is often reported at the bar is a set of disembodied red eyes. These piercing eyes stare at you from the unlit corners of the first floor until you turn to meet them. They’re said to then lock onto your presence, then slowly fade away.

Whether it’s ghosts, or a little too much Voodoo Daiquiri, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar has undeniable history that leaves a profound impact on its guests and it’s definitely worth a stop if you’re ever in the area.
